Thanks to the dedicated, brave and persistent generations of advocates for LGBT rights, freedoms, and equality, huge progress has been achieved worldwide by improving life, security, opportunities, and equality for millions of LGBT community members. We need to recognize that LGBT people have the same right to love and marry the person they love, to have the same freedoms and rights in their careers, social, political and economic life like everyone else.
However, even though we have come so far, there is still much work in front of us. We have to:
- Support LGBT youth, communities, and families.
- Provide safe shelters for homeless LGBT youth that has been left behind by their families, friends, community, and country.
- Fight for an AIDS-free generation.
- Fight for the full legal equality of LGBT people by protecting them from discrimination on the basis of their sexual orientation and gender identity.
- Prevent bullying of young LGBT people in schools.
- Encourage tolerance, understanding, and acceptance of LGBT people in every community.
- Protect transgender rights by helping men and women to go through a safe transition.
- Increase health care services for transgender people and make them more affordable.
- Make it easier for a transgender person to change the gender marker on identification documents and make sure that full equality in the society is guaranteed.
- Promote LGBT rights, both nationally and globally, by ensuring the foreign policy is inclusive and respectful of LGBT people.
- Firmly oppose any legislation that purports to “protect” religious liberty at the expense of others’ rights.
