Tragically, women are the ones whose human rights are violated most often. Even in the 21st century, the rape of women continues to be used as the instrument of “male dominance” and patriarchy. Unfortunately, those who commit this terrible crime, do not bear legal consequences often and rarely experience disapproval and condemnation in the society. This must stop now.
Thanks to the efforts of advocates and brave survivors, we are seeing the beginnings of good work and change around the world.
Dino believes that we can fight against sexual assaults if we are guided by core principles:
- Make the criminal justice system more effective providing all the needed legal instruments to the sexual assault survivors.
- Increase public awareness about sexual assaults on campuses, workplaces, public places and in the families.
- Increase prevention efforts by introducing the sexual violence prevention education program in secondary schools and colleges, at work and in the government offices.
- Provide unconditional support to survivors of sexual assault.
- Provide confidential and coordinated counseling and health care for survivors.
- Encourage national governments to create more comprehensive policies which will help survivors to face their attackers.
- Fund organizations and groups who are helping survivors to integrate into everyday life after assaults.
- Ensure a fair process for all involved and transparency.
